Privacy Policy

Last updated: February 4, 2026

InTown ("we," "our," or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how your personal information is collected, used, and disclosed by InTown.

1. Information We Collect

A. Location Data (Crucial Feature)

InTown's primary feature is helping you connect with friends who are nearby. To provide this service, we collect:

  • Precise Location: We collect your precise location data to determine if you are in the same city as your friends.
  • Background Location: If you grant "Always" permission, we collect location data even when the app is closed or not in use. This allows us to send you and your mutual friends notifications when you are in the same town.

Note: We do not share your real-time exact coordinates with other users. Friends only see a broad status (e.g., "In Town") or distance (e.g., "5 miles away") based on your privacy settings.

B. Contacts

We access your phone's address book (Contacts) to help you find friends who are already using InTown.

  • We only upload phone numbers to check for matches with existing users.
  • We do not store your contacts' details permanently on our servers unless they are also InTown users.
  • We do not message your contacts without your explicit action (like sending an invite).

C. Personal Information

When you create an account, we collect:

  • Name
  • Phone Number (for authentication)
  • Profile Photo

D. Calendar Access (Optional)

If you grant permission, we access your calendar to help you easily import upcoming trip dates to let friends know when you'll be in their city.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the collected information to:

  • Notify you when mutual friends are nearby.
  • Notify mutual friends when you are nearby (based on your privacy settings).
  • Facilitate chat and event planning within the app.
  • Improve our services and fix technical issues.

3. Sharing of Information

  • With Friends: Your "In Town" status and profile information are visible only to users who are in your contacts and who also have you in their contacts (Mutual Friends).
  • Service Providers: We use third-party services (like Google Maps for location services, Supabase for database hosting) to operate the app. These providers access data only to perform tasks on our behalf.
  • Legal Requirements: We may disclose information if required by law or in response to valid requests by public authorities.

4. Your Choices

  • Location Tracking: You can disable background location tracking at any time in your device settings. Identifying friends nearby will only work when you have the app open if specific permissions are revoked.
  • Account Deletion: You can request the deletion of your account and all associated data within the app settings.
